NOA urges Nigerians to stop acts leading to flooding

The Director of the National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Abia, Mrs Ngozi Uduma, has called on Nigerians to desist from acts capable of endangering the environment.
Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Umuahia on Monday, Uduma said indiscriminate dumping of refuse, felling of trees, unregulated soil excavation and erecting buildings without proper drainage system were capable of causing floods and other environmental disasters.

She said the Federal Government spent more than N20 billion to address flooding experienced in some parts of the country in 2012.
Uduma said the fight against flooding would produce better results through preventive measures, including awareness campaigns.

The director, however, appealed to residents of the state to develop good environmental habits with a view to preventing flood and diseases in the environment.

Uduma also urged traditional rulers, community and religious leaders to initiate awareness campaigns on how best to tackle flooding in their communities.
