MAKU URGES NORTHERN LEADERS TO ENCOURAGE TREE PLANTING

The Nigerian Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, on Sunday called on Northern leaders to support the Green Wall Desert Encroachment Control Policy of the Federal Government by encouraging planting of trees.
Maku in Zauro, Kebbi State, after the Good Governance tour team inspected facilities at Zauro General Hospital.
Maku, who decried the decline in tree planting in the North, said the green wall programme was adopted to check desert encroachment.
He said that under the programme, trees would be planted in the Northern states for 10 years.
"The alarming rate of desert encroachment has resulted in the movement of livestock to other parts of the country for grazing and that had caused problems between farmers and cattle breeders."
The minister said that youths should be engaged in tree planting, adding that it would boost employment.
Maku also condoled the state government over the death of the Government House Chief of Staff, Alhaji Sarki Kigo.
Responding, Dakingari described the deceased as humble and hardworking who served as a bridge between workers and government during his service with Sokoto State up till when Kebbi State was created.
The government on Sunday said Kigo, 60, died on Saturday.
