Nigerian FG steps up environmental advocacy campaign – Mailafia

The Federal Ministry of Environment says it has stepped up environmental education and advocacy campaign across the country, ahead of the predicted heavy rainfall and floods in 2013.
The Minister of Environment, Hadiza Mailafia, said said this  in Abuja addressing the management staff of the ministry.

Mailafia warned against complacency and directed that the tempo of activities relating to erosion, flood and environmental sanitation be stepped up to avert another flood-related disasters in the country.
She called for immediate implementation of the resolutions of the various stakeholders meetings and recommendations of committees set up after the 2012 floods.
She directed that educational jingles, which had already been produced in English, pidgin and the three widely used Nigerian languages, be broadcast on national, regional and state television and radio stations ``to reach the broadest spectrum of the populace with appropriate messages.
``The jingles are on the issues of flooding, desertification, sanitation, erosion and land degradation and will run for one quarter, to be followed by documentaries in the second quarter of the year.
``Programmes are billed to run on the 36 NTA stations in the country, Channels Television, NTA Network and select zonal and state radio stations across the country.’’
The minister said that out-door billboards would be displayed in strategic places across the country to reinforce the messages in the electronic media.
She added that there would be more proactive programmes to keep the nation on top of environmental challenges.
The minister noted that the national environmental education and advocacy campaign was being pursued for the first time in the country.
The initiative, she said, was to give effect to the vision and passion of  the President for a national green environment movement involving all persons and groups in the country.
