A
non-governmental organisation, Waste Management Society of Nigeria, has said
that waste can be managed through waste exchange, environmental education
and effective sanitation enlightenment.
Miss Edith Iriruaga, the organisation’s
Administrative Secretary, said this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Abuja.
Iriruaga described waste exchange
as a special platform that provides opportunity for one organisation to trade
its residue (‘waste’) with another outfit that needs it as a resource.’
According to her, the organisation
uses environmental programmes such as the recently celebrated World
Environment Day to bring enlightenment to the people about waste management and
the environment.
`` This enlightenment is actually aimed
at exchanging waste for money instead of discarding it; we have a platform on
our website which we call ‘waste exchange.
`` When you identify the kind of waste
you would like to exchange, we try to match it with the individuals who need
such waste; because where it is a waste for one person, it is a resource for
another.
`` What it means is that if you don’t
have need of a particular thing, others may be there who may value such item
for better usage and have to pay money for them even.’’
According to her, ‘Waste to Wealth’ is
about making available what does not hold value for one person in exchange for
money, with the person that it holds value for and that will drastically reduce
waste generation.
She said that the organisation had set
up newsletter which educates and enlightens people on how they could turn
their waste into wealth.
`` Our interest is to take a look at the
waste industry and management of waste in Nigeria and to do this; we make use
of environmental programmes like the just concluded World Environment Day with
the theme ` Eat Think, Save.
The secretary said that the organisation was
currently operating in Delta, Edo, Ogun, Rivers, Lagos and Oyo while
Bayelsa and the FCT would soon come on board.
